Hi, I just turned 40 and I'm becoming interested in reenacting in a mainstream environment. I live on the pacific coast and am a long ways from the famous east coast sites, but am willing to visit them during events. I have yet also to acquire gear. My biggest concerns are am I too old to start? And I may not be able to always camp because my family won't be willing to. Should I still pursue this or are proximity and serious commitment essentials to getting started?

If you are with a unit they will tell you from which sutler to buy your uniform and other equipment so as to give the unit a more uniform appearance especially with federal impressions. You'll also have the opportunity to attend " School of the Solider" and learn Drill movements. Generally most units I'm aquatinted with want you in camp . 40 no you aren't too old but some of it will be more challenging due to age.

Never too old to reenact.

Beyond the battle reenactments, there are Civil War sites on the Pacific coast which occasionally invite reenactors for living history programs for the public. These include Alcratraz island, which was garrisoned during the war...

There's Fort Yamhill in Oregon... they have some pre-war and wartime garrison encampments...
