My favorite part (I think this is correct) is the black dog with a white patch of fur on its chest laying on its side on the porch to the left. Dog looks like he is taking his usual nap and has raised his head to check out what all the excitement is about.
 
The road in front of the buildings was described as a turnpike. Why, I don't know. It resembles a dry creek bed and the effect of a hard rain can be imagined. This link shows the same area now with the famous stone church that is in the middle of the older picture. Things have changed in Centreville quite a bit.
