I have fond memories of the circus as well. It was a huge treat and something we looked forward to as kids.
Only recently did I learn that Mr. P.T. Barnum, who thought, "there's a sucker born every minute," contributed to higher educational pursuits in a way I didn't know. He was apparently an original Trustee of Tufts University, in Massachusetts, and paid for that institution's Museum of Natural History, still extant.
Barnum also endowed and helped build the facilities that would support Tuft's science programs in the late 19th century. I guess he understood, there is room for both nonsense and science and a place for both in this world.
