"When he knew that death had marked him for his own, he said to me Johnnie if a boy dies for his country the glory is his forever isn't it? We buried him with military honors in the soil of Mississippi, that far southern sister in whose defense many of our Kentucky boys gave up their lives."-SGT. Johnny Green, 9th Kentucky Infantry CSA

@TerryB will recognize this one.

During the battle of Thompson's Station, several locals sheltered in the basement of the Homestead Manor, which was square in the middle of the battlefield, including 17 year old Alice Thompson. As the 3d Arkansas was advancing through the yard the color bearer fell from a volley. Alice impulsively ran out of the basement, picked up the flag and waved it to rally the regiment. The colonel, Samuel G. Earle, yelled out "Boys, a woman has your flag."

The soldiers rallied and pushed Alice back to the basement. Col. Earle was killed shortly thereafter. I have always wondered whether Col. Earle's said this sarcastically or angrily. I can understand either version working.
Thanks for posting!

Hmmm… the rest of the quote is ". Rally behind the Virginians!"

There is another stone wall quote from Antietam from a disgruntled officer.

Below is AI generated
Jackson refused to budge before an enemy onslaught (the place where his statue stands today at Antietam) and someone of his troops shouted out in the chaos "There stands Jackson like a stone wall!" It has also been alleged that it was actually said by a disgruntled commander of another unit who felt Jackson hadn't .
Some quotes say "Rally behind the Virginians" others say "Rally to the Virginians"
