During the battle of Thompson's Station, several locals sheltered in the basement of the Homestead Manor, which was square in the middle of the battlefield, including 17 year old Alice Thompson. As the 3d Arkansas was advancing through the yard the color bearer fell from a volley. Alice impulsively ran out of the basement, picked up the flag and waved it to rally the regiment. The colonel, Samuel G. Earle, yelled out "Boys, a woman has your flag."

The soldiers rallied and pushed Alice back to the basement. Col. Earle was killed shortly thereafter. I have always wondered whether Col. Earle's said this sarcastically or angrily. I can understand either version working.

Alternatively, with great respect for the woman. Just a thought.

""From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia...could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide."

Abraham Lincoln

"There stands Jackson like a stonewall". Gen. Barnard Bee about Thomas Jackson. But did he mean it or was he being sarcastic?
Hmmm… the rest of the quote is ". Rally behind the Virginians!"

There is another stone wall quote from Antietam from a disgruntled officer.

Below is AI generated
Jackson refused to budge before an enemy onslaught (the place where his statue stands today at Antietam) and someone of his troops shouted out in the chaos "There stands Jackson like a stone wall!" It has also been alleged that it was actually said by a disgruntled commander of another unit who felt Jackson hadn't .
