Hello My Friends,

I'm still new to the forum and spending a lot more time writing and researching than interacting here (I will one day soon)...

I have a Gettysburg book coming out that I must get to the publisher by the end of June.

I am researching Major Eugene Carter who served at Gettysburg.

He was born in Maine, but I am having a difficult time locating where in Maine he was born. Does anyone have an answer on this - and a source?

Thanks.

My Best,
Paul Semendinger

Bridgton, ME is correct (going from date of birth). He was last found in Maine in 1850 but by the time of his 1864 marriage, he'd become a citizen of Massachusetts.

Bridgton is a lovely town, right on a series of lakes. If you want to look into Lt. Carter's family, you might try the Bridgton Historical Society ([email protected]).

One of my more embarrassing memories comes from the Bridgton area. Shortly after moving to Maine, I was camping with some friends on Lake Sebago; as the first awake, I was out making coffee when raucous, uncontrolled laughter rolled across the water. I raced back to the tent exclaiming "We've got to get out of here: there's a hysterical man across the lake!" Turned out that it was a loon.

I think that Lt. Carter was a bit hardier.
