You can see the defensive earthworks in the lower left. These were reportedly designed by Calvin Fay who was the "architect" working at the Etowah Ironworks just upriver from here. He later became a prominent postwar architect in Atlanta and is buried in Oakland Cemetery. He later designed defensive works at Milledgeville. He had previously been an engineer/sapper at Island No. 10 and Vicksburg.

Fays Battalion was the Artillery unit there.
