In the first photo, the engine, ("Fred Leach"), looks like it went though h..... The stack has a big hole in it and you can see other damage also to the engine. Great photos of history! Thanks for sharing. :smile coffee:

Another view of the Fred Leach in better shape from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County digital collection. If you open the link and enlarge the photo you can read the name plate on the side of the locomotive. The Fred Leach was the locomotive shot up by Mosby's Raiders at Catlett Station on May 30, 1863 (Ref: Chasing Jeb Stuart and John Mosby: The Union Cavalry in Northern Virginia from Second Manassas to Gettysburg by Robert F. O'Neill, page 196).

The first photo is also identified as "Engine "Hero" destroyed by Confederates in evacuating Atlanta, Ga. Engine used by Mitchell's men in attempt to burn R.R. bridges. They were caught upon it and hanged in Atlanta." at the National Archives - #530395

The name Fred Leach is visible on this National Archives photo. "Engine "Fred Leach", U.S. Military Railroad, showing marks of cannon shot." - #529295

The second photo engine looks different than the first?
