Hello all.
After much digging through family archives, I discovered that one of my Great-Great-Great-Great Grandaunts, Elizabeth Wormeley Latimer, spent the years leading up to the Civil War raising funds to purchase the freedom of slaves in Virginia. And by happenstance, one of her main benefactors was brother-in-law to another of my Great-Great-Great-Great Grandaunts, Marianna Preble Longfellow, Elizabeth's sister. And his name? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Now, in regards to the time Elizabeth was carrying out her duty to help individuals and families escape from the institution of slavery, would there have been any prominent risks to a young woman from the North venturing south to rescue slaves? Any help you can provide will be very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
