I went down to Petersburg this morning to see Ed Bearss give a speech on the siege of the city. He mostly focused on how the armies ended up in Petersburg, and the opening days of the siege. He did talk about The Crater a little bit during the Q+A portion.

As always, it was great. In regard to Grant giving Lee the slip after Cold Harbor, he said that Grant "maneuvered Lee out of his jock strap" (that may not be exact, but is close. Hopefully, someone got the speech on film).

As a bonus I got to meet him and he signed 2 copies of his Petersburg Eastern Front book for me (one for me and one for my cousin). He had a sweet Scooby Doo tie on.

Anyway, what a great man and historian.

lucky you.

great to see him on his feet, the man is a national treasure

I feel very fortunate to have seen him speak twice. I also ran into him giving a tour on Little Round Top two years ago. Yes, I listened in for a bit. Hopefully, I'll get another chance to see him speak.

I ran into him at Brice's Crossroads a few years ago. I only got to hear that distinctive voice for a few minutes.

Maybe one day I can take one of his tours.

Yeah, i met him too about 22 years ago. He was a speaker at a series of seminars on turning points in the Civil War held in Gettysburg. I got to talk one on one with him in the lobby for about 20 minutes......actually, he did almost all the talking and i just stood there like an idiot with my mouth open just soaking in all the wisdom....what a great memory.
