Early in Georgia

Instead of being sent to the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, what if Jubal Early had been sent to Georgia to take command of the Army Of The Tennessee? How would he have done against Sherman? Could he have saved Atlanta?

I think he would have looked like a crabby Joe Johnston. He never showed the aggressive spirit of a Hood. I think the question truly is whether there was any way at all to save Atlanta.

TV45, I disagree about your assumption on Early. He ran a very aggressive valley campaign as he cleared the valley of the union forces. Heck, He even took a swipe at Washington,DC...I he would have been more successful then Hood only because Hood had to many health issues to be in the field anymore...

I think Early would have had a difficult time, due to the personality issues in the AoT. Early would have probably become Bragg II.

I don't think Early had quite the same personality dysfunctionality as Bragg, but yeah - someone with his disposition would not have been a good commander.

I must side with 5fish here - though I would be reluctant to give Early army command.

He'd be jumping from division to corps to army - bit much, if you ask me.

Would have been a tough opponent for Sherman, but of course the question on sending him is "How? When?"

That is a problem. And one I'd like to see answered before figuring out if it would have mattered there.

Note: My memory on when Early was sent to the Valley is deciding to go AWOL. I know I've read it, I just can't recall.

But the "how" is a biggie - the railroads are shot.
