Had the Union let the Confederate state go in 1861 what would have been the status of people born in Confederate states, but residing in Union states? Say someone was born in Virginia but living in Ohio and they believed their allegiance was to their home state. Would they have dual citizenship?
Where I see this being a problem is that most nations want to protect there citizens residing in other nations. What would happen if Southern citizens living in Colorado formed a pro southern militia and seized arms belonging to the United States in an attempt to bring Colorado do into the Confederacy. If the U.S government made any attempt to disarm the Confederate citizens, would the Confederacy feel obligate to protect its citizens? I guess this could have been solved by treaties between the two nations.
