Dragoons

Yep. Orange was the Dragoon branch color....untill 1861, there was no Cavalry in the US Army. The first Cavalry regiment in the US Army was the 1st US Cavalry, originaly the 1st Dragoon Regiment, and the name change took effect by act of Congress on August 3, 1861, and Yellow designated as the branch color. One Regiment, IIIRC the 1st, kept its orange trim untill it's uniforms wore out.

Thank you kindly for your answer RP :)

The Dragoons wore their saber insignia inverted as shown.

Though I don't believe that officers would have any orange on their uniforms save potentially a trouser welt. It's a tough one, most of the people who do dragoons that I know do 1840s or 50s exclusively
