OMG, so sad. I first met him while racing thru the various sites relating to the Fredericksburg line back in the early 1990s with my favorite cousin who was working at the Pentagon in Naval Intel. He was working in the NPS store at Dudley Station where we went to visit Jackson's amputated arm. I got to chatting with this "kid" who it turns out was working on his masters at Penn State and was doing the NPS work as a part-timer during the summer. We got to chatting and we must have talked for the next 90', right there in the middle of the store with tourists wandering around us, and we both didn't want to leave any stone unturned, but the chat was at all time amicable. When I said good bye to him I told my cousin as we were leaving that we would see that kid again, one of my greatest predictions ever! We he reached a level of notoriety I had the audacity to send him a text, about 20 yrs later, to compliment him on his career and he remembered me and details I had forgotten. I thought he'd be continuing his good work long after I passed on, but it was meant to be. This is truly a tragedy, at least it is for me. God bless his friends and family. That's very sad. Rick was extremely knowledgeable on the Ask A Guide segments of the podcast. I didn't know him beyond that, but my condolences to all who did.
