Matt Callery of Addressing Gettysburg just announced via livestream that his friend Dr. Peter Carmichael has passed away. He did not have more details than that and said that the family will share more. I'll update this post.

You may know him for his role as Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, his four books, or his Civil War scholarship. It's a big loss for people who care about history and even more so for those who knew him.

RIP, Dr. Carmichael. I met him once at the Civil War Institute. I was dining on my own and he made a point to come over and ask how I was liking it. Seemed like a nice guy.

Sad news. I was just about to watch him host McPherson and Guelzo. The bottom vid to be exact. I also recently saw him in History's Channel's Gettysburg miniseries. His commentary was 100% better than the overly-dramatic reenactments.

This is devastating news.... My daughter took his Civil War Era class at Gettysburg College last fall- it wound up being her (a music major) favorite class...We had the opportunity to meet him on Parents weekend -where he led a tour of the battlefield....A true gentleman and Scholar- incredibly knowledgeable and kind. A terrible loss....Condolences and Prayers to his wife and children....

Tough news. I feel terrible for his family.

I won't forget Pete's friendly support when my book was published. It wasn't something he had to do, he just did it because that's the kind of guy he was. The Civil War community has lost a good guy.
