Good evening everyone, I have a question. About a year or two ago I got a double breasted great coat for Christmas. I was wondering if I could possibly get away with using it for a officers great coat ?
If I can remember early and pre war the officer great coat was a dark blue and about mid or late war a regulation passed where officers could wear the same color coat as enlisted men

If you are portraying mid and late war officer I do believe that sky blue is ok. So
Sometimes subdued rank insignia was used on the great coat to tell officers apart

The cavalry greatcoat has two rows of buttons. I wouldn´t even blink twice at anyone wearing one reenacting, honestly. If it´s cold enogh for a greatcoat, it´s cold. Period. One thing though: The cape on the cavalry coat is longer than the infantry coat. It might get in the way unless you button it back. Try it on and make sure this detail doesn´t bother you.
