This is one of my favorites by Don Troiani called The Last Rounds. Its not based on any historical battle or any certain regiment like most of his others are but it resembles dismounted cavalry in what seems to be a last stand situation in 1865.

I love them all, the two that have personal importance "The Cornfield" and "Bronze Guns and Iron Men". A GGG Grandfather at the Cornfield and survived.Another serving the piece from May 61 to April 65 surviving wounds and illness.

Was your GGG with the Texans in the cornfield? That's also one of my favorites because I had a 3 great uncle in the cornfield also. Trouble is our ancestors were shooting at each other. He was with 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Iron Brigade. One of my other favorites is the boy from the 4th Wisconsin and the Confederate Soldier fighting over the Confederate flag in the railroad cut first day at Gettysburg. Rufus Dawes men. His work is so beautifully brutal and hypnotic. I can just stare at it for hours. And usually see something new I never noticed before.

"Confederate infantry led by officer holding a 2nd National battle flag. 1864-1865" is all I can find so far.

It seems to depict Franklin, but the text in Troiani's Don Troiani's Civil War does not identify the officer with the flag. Craig Symonds used it on the cover of one edition of his biography of Cleburne, but I don't think it's meant to be him personally.

This is one of my favorites, it is an original watercolor I managed to find last spring. It is called A Confederate Cavalryman 1861. He painted this in 1981

Thanks for posting those Dude, haven't seen them before. I've found quite a few more by Troiani since I posted this thread.

"Three Medals of Honor Battle of New Market Heights" 6th USCT at New Market Heights on Sept. 29, 1864.

"Emmitsburg Road" Maj. Gen. Isaac R. Trimble leads his men in the attack on Cemetery Ridge on July 3.

Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862 rallying his men with his sword, rusted in the scabbard. He shouted "Jackson is with you, rally brave men, and press forward!"

"DeGress' Battery " At the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, the 66th Illinois Infantry Regiment, armed with Henry repeaters, retakes the 1st Illinois Light Artillery. The Battery was commanded by Captain Francis DeGress and was made up of four 20-pounder Parrot rifles. It was overrun by Brig. Gen. Arthur M. Manigault's Brigade.

Yea, you know it seems that a lot of the early ones he did had a southwestern theater theme

This is one of my all time favorite Don Troiani pieces, this particular original became available last year and I managed to pick it up recently and just received it today. The face he did on this is simply amazing and truthfully the picture does not do justice to the real thing. Pumped up!!!!
