I sold my Sharps book at a gun show some years ago, My ? what changes were made in the "New Model" 1859 and 1863?
I know that some of the 1859 rifles had a bayonet lug but other than that what merited a "New Model" in the rifle?
I know some of the earlier carbines had a patch box but other than that what changes?
Thanks for your input!

As you mention the patch box was eliminated, buy not until after approx the first 1000 New Model 1863. I have an very early 1863 with patch box. Markings on the barrel of course. Main difference was the clean out screw in the breech block was replaced by a large headed slotted one to replace the small headless one.
