Devils Den, Gettysburg Periodic photo (1908)

Attached is a photo of my grandfather Bernard Jacob Stock at Devils Den, May 1908 with his 'date'. For comparison, a photo of me in 2012 at the same location. I believe the angles on the rocks indicate I am in the same place as the 1908 photo made more than 100 years before. Interesting to me is that the tree that sits in the 1908 photo could well have been there during the 1863 battle (45 years later) . The tree does show great age in the photo and today , of course, is no longer there. Perhaps someone with tree knowledge could identify what type of tree that was. I can only imagine how many bullets were imbedded in the tree.

This rock face at Devils Den directly faces Little Roundtop.

Noting personal but his 'date' sure looks better sitting among the rocks! It must be a thrill to have a comparison photo of your grandfather and being right were his was at one time. Congratulations!

Yes, well, there is abundant resources and such from where I come.. And I was fortunate to find plenty of farmstuffs while in Pennsylvania!!

Look to his left shoulder and head. You should see a sideways L

Heres a 1909 panoramic photo of DD. The tree in your historic family photo appears to be on the right. Was trying to id tree species by bark but no luck so was trying look for tree crown shape and found this pic. Elms have a vase shape and considering the bark thats my guess. But then again they tend not to fork at the base.
