I'm not a re-enactor. Although, I do dress the part once a year at minimum, & do somewhat fantasize about possibly re-enacting at some point.

I've come to realize that kepi's just aren't that accurate when it comes to Confederate impressions. Meaning, I can't help but notice more times than not, when I see period photos of Confederates, they are rarely wearing kepi's. Seems the majority are wearing other headgear. Slouch hats, & others, seem to be the predominant choice.

I'm interested in getting a halfway decent one. Due to my experience in other fields, I've learned the value in trusting others more knowledgeable than myself, on a particular subject. Rather than just blindly throwing away cash, thought I'd defer to those with more experience.

Care to share some pics, & or sources for a good slouch hat..? Thanks in advance..!

Check this guy out, I have one of his hats and love it. https://www.facebook.com/GooberGrabberHeadwear/

Here's two good hats I have, the one on the left came from Goober Grabber (Avery Miller) and the one on the right came from Dirty Billy's Hats. Both are good but I prefer the left, fits better and made from wool not felt, I find it more comfortable

Check this one out, from his FB page:

That is a super cool hat in my opinion. Not sure exactly what I'm looking for but, I like this one too:

He does great work and can replicate any period style and whatever material. Mine is his Deep South Beehive. I also like his English import hat I may get at some point.

You are right about the kepis, the guys in the field preferred a good slouch hat, way better at keeping at least some of the sun and rain off you. And if you spend at least a little time in the field like we do you'll quickly agree although some do like their kepis.
For me the kepi was quick, & easy. I believe the uninformed believe they were more prominent than they were. Just makes sense so to speak. Blue kepi vs Grey kepi. Easy enough...lol.

It really wasn't until I took the whole subject more serious, that I noticed that just wasn't the case. Most of the pictures I've seen have very few Confederates wearing kepi's. They seem to be much more prevalent at modern events than period photos suggest.

When observing serious re-enactors, other headgear appears to be more popular. Less than serious (like myself), seem to favor kepi's more. I assume most for the reason's I've already stated. Convenience, & or just not taking it to the serious level.

My son has a kepi that I bought for him at Fort Mackinac, the first year that they started the later impression..it is a very nice kepi..I think they lucked out as far as their source. He recently bought a forage cap..bought from someone I know, and he was able to try it on. The hat now has his brass on it..artillary. I bought the brass from Gettysburg. That was a birthday present if I recall correctly. So yeah, he has alwasy been a history buff..somewhere I have him wearing his Grandfathers Merchant Marine dress uniform top..which is really a shell jacket..plastic sword..card board kepi..oh my!
