Dahlgren's raid Controversy

Wait a minute. Look, it seems that the young meets the old. It is the seniors to educate not erase and this young person is polite and as he says knows a little about the subject. He deserves to be helped without dismissal from discussion.
He deserves better.

Well, 'twas a bit tongue-in-cheek. Should have known better ... such subtleties are often misinterpreted.

But still, the young pup has had ample time here to realize to whom he is speaking. If you don't know much, and realize that you don't, then a more humble approach is warranted. So .... twenty on Eric !

Some times people will show their patience wearing thin too quick. No, as far as a "know to whom one is speaking" is bad advice for someone willing to learn. Everyone here is equal posting on this forum.

I know that I was shocked when I first joined up at some of the opinions voiced on here. I'd never, ever, done anything like a forum before and so charged in. Ole was kind enough to kind of pull me aside and explain how things work a bit and I thank him for it.

Hold on! Any repercussions are his own fault. His very first post on this board (my bold):
"My username is Civil War Scholar and I chose it because I am very interested in the war, no matter that I am not an American and I am an ardent collector of Civil War books and other related items.
I generally maintain a neutral viewpoint in my discussions and respect the opinions of others, Union or Confederate.
Whether my personal sympathies lie has little significance unless the discussions concern them and they can be "justified" historically."

Sorry, but he is anything but "neutral" and when asked to provide sources, he provides generic sources such as Foote, Wiki, or the O.R.s and claims he can't get any Civil War related books in his (supposed) homeland of Greece. The quality English in his comments alternate from broken type English on some to better English than many Americans are capable of writing on others. I agree with Malingerer who stated earlier that he thought we were being "punked."

Copperhead,
I am really from Greece and I am proud of my heritage my ancestors transmitted to me and hope I will transmit it to my posterity, as well. I collect Civil War books, but Amazon doesn't ship to Greece. Those contributions to my library are made by my friends, in the UK and the USA. I still haven't visited America but I have American friends who agree to buy the books and send it to me via courier. Of course, I give them their money back.
The reason my English generally maintain the average speaker's quality is the fact that I had a very good tutor, who taught me everything necessary to carry on a conversation.
What is my inaccuracy in the comment? What you may consider as "neutral" depends of your definition of the word. Neutral can be misinterpreted and this is common in Internet messages, where you can not determine the tone of a message.
For an epilogue, I say, you are not "punked."

Keyser Soze,
Jefferson Davis was a capable politician and leader. Robert E. Lee said that few people would do better as President of the Confederacy than Davis. Davis had in fact to create a nation, much like Washington. And his task was even more difficult, since Washington first won the war and then created the nation. Davis had to do them simultaneously.

Put him on ignore then.

Hold your money, John Winn. There will be no duel or match. Eric may be eager, but I am not.

After some reflection I feel that I may have done you a disservice and now wish to publicly apologize if that is the case.

I really was just trying to be clever in saying one must be careful here regarding challenges and statements of opinion. I now feel I failed in that and may be guilty of the very thing that I have complained of more than once.

Please forgive me. My best.

Well said.......you're a very thoughtful person.

I would suggest the avoidance of the term neutral if it causes problems.

Actually, I think neutral is good. It implies that there is no agenda behind uncovering evidence neither condemning nor supporting one side or another, but rather looking for facts.

That however is a rare beast. We all look for evidence supporting our own view of history. I'll suppose that neutrality is an impossibility ... that we are human, and want our views to be correct.

Meanwhile, we're digging up stuff that we couldn't imagine 10 years ago. And that is useful.

Thank you for your kindness, John Winn. You are welcome.
