This is said to be the original custard pie recipe. It is creamy and smooth and not too sweet. If you want to dress it up some, add freshly whipped cream on top and dust with toasted coconut.

The book, "The New England Economical Housekeeper" was written by Esther Allen Howland (1801-1860). This recipe is from edition published by H.W. Derby of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1845. Her book was very popular in 1800s. It was printed over 40 years with different titles, editions and revisions.
There is so much that can be added to this,it is like a basic french white sauce and then go from there.

Yum.

I never heard it called custard pie. That was moms sugar pie. Pretty good eatin'.

Interesting. Indiana's State Pie is "Sugar Cream Pie," which is custard-y in texture but doesn't have eggs in it. The "Sugar Pie" recipes I have seen all have brown sugar in them, like this one, which I totally need to try out sometime:

I tend to like "desperation pie" recipes. For that matter, I have yet to find a custard pie I don't like. Although eggnog custard may be my favorite. Have to give this "original custard pie" recipe a shot sometime. Thanks for posting it, donna!
