The Tallahassee, as might be surmised by her appearance, was a former blockade runner, the Atalanta; like her namesake of Greek myth, the Atalanta (frequently misspelled Atlanta, of course) was one of the fastest of her kind.
After her cruise as the Tallahassee under John Taylor Wood, she made a second quick cruise under the name of CSS Olustee before being disarmed and turned back into a blockade runner, with the fitting name of Chameleon. Chameleon was one of the last few vessels to run the blockade out of Wilmington NC before the fall of Fort Fisher, under the command of the renowned blockade running skipper Lt. John Wilkinson.
