There actually was no gunboat named CSS Slidell.
Slidell was only a temporary name for the CSS Maurepas during its construction.
The steamer Grosse Tete was purchased for $40,000 by G.N. Hollins on December 10, 1862 at New Orleans.
This vessel was converted into the gunboat CSS Maurepas there
Lt. Joseph Fry, previously commander of the CSS Ivy, was assigned command of the Maurepas in early 1862, exact date not found by me, but his name first appears in relation to the Maurepas on a voucher dated January 25, 1862.
As early as January 10 the vessel began to be temporarily referred to as the CSS Slidell.
The first use of the official name CSS Maurepas was on February 14, 1862.
This voucher is headed "C.S. Gunboat Slidell, now Maurepas."
For a brief time Lt. Fry signed some vouchers headed Slidell and others headed Maurepas. This indicates that for a short time the vessel was referred to by both names.
The first of March was the last date the name Slidell is used.
After that date the vessel is only referred to by its official name Maurepas.
Four vouchers clearly indicate that the name of the vessel was changed as above.
There is no credible evidence of the existence of another CSS Slidell.
