Lately, there has been a lot of press about the discovery of the Confederate gunboat Peedee in South Carolina.

Apparently, there is not much left of it, but any time we find stuff we've lost, that is a good thing.

I found it interesting to read about the 1954 attempt to recover part of it by businessmen for their roadside attraction called Confederateland. The recovered a 30-foot piece of the stern, the engines, propeller shafts and boiler. Travelers could view the remains for 25 cents.

However, no conservation was made and much of it disintegrated.

The boiler somehow made it to South of the Border, the popular tourist trap at the NC/SC border on I-95. It has since disappeared, probably sold for salvage.

Well that sucks!
The home built Confederate ships are always of interest to me, but digging up hardcore information is always a challenge. I did manage to glean enough info to produce a paper model of the CSS Peedee. I can't guarantee that it is 100 percent correct, but it is as close as my current info allows.

Here is a long detail story about finding the CSS Peedee

I went with the shorter two mast version on my model. It could be that the Peedee was larger, with three masts, but I have seen that same picture- http://southcarolina1670.files.wordp.../12/peedee.jpg identified as the CSS Chattahoochee as well. Info is always the hard part on CSN ships.

Now that the CSS Peedee has been found and been studied. An accurate design of the CSS Peedee should be possible now...
