Lately, there has been a lot of press about the discovery of the Confederate gunboat Peedee in South Carolina.
Apparently, there is not much left of it, but any time we find stuff we've lost, that is a good thing.
I found it interesting to read about the 1954 attempt to recover part of it by businessmen for their roadside attraction called Confederateland. The recovered a 30-foot piece of the stern, the engines, propeller shafts and boiler. Travelers could view the remains for 25 cents.
However, no conservation was made and much of it disintegrated.
The boiler somehow made it to South of the Border, the popular tourist trap at the NC/SC border on I-95. It has since disappeared, probably sold for salvage.
