Did any CSMC flags survive? If not, where did this flag come from?

It might have been the official flag, but it looks early on. Of course I could be wrong.

My thought on it as they were part of the Navy they may have used the ensign. I think the second national flag.

My.best guess is that they used what was there. The uniforms bear that out too. On ship's some adopted naval uniforms with a roll collar. I've seem photographs of single breasted frocks and double breasted. Israel Green had shoulder knots and collar bars on what looked like a 'Richmond gray' and unit in Savanah was wearing gray flannel.

I'll find the book on the CSMC. It's must read. I'll post in a few.

I've read that CSMC Colors were based on the Stars and Bars with an Old English M in the caton so that would fit. I have also heard but can't confirm that an Original CSMC Colors is in Virginia at a museum.
I've seen the photo of the uniform. It looks much like a CS army uniform with dark blue cuffs and collar. Down south, from what I've readbthey were either getting cloth fromb Europe through Galveston or they wearing as close as they could get to regulations drawing from stores, particularly in Savannah and Mobile.

However I've seen cadet gray jean, so that may have been used. This as organized near on the bluff and near Richmond. They were as well supplied as could be as that color of wool was run in on fairly consistent basis.
So that is IMO.

As to the flag, is there one the Museum of the Confederacy?

Now you'll have me lookin' online.

I'll post a link to a book, but not the book on Confederate marines. There is also a Navy and CMSC roster there. A 2. And 2.0.

I'll post those too.

And they were letting slaves who did a little shooting too. Against policy you know.

Unsure where it is.About 20 years ago I was acquainted with a guy who had reencted as Union Marine in Maryland. He told me there was a CSMC flag in a museum in Virginia maybe it was at the museum of the Confederacy. Don't really know and can't confirm it's solid information.

Thank you. I'm a beginning reenactor; CSMC.

It would make sense that the Marine flag would be based on the 1st National, as that was the naval ensign for a long time after it had passed from usage in the field army.
@ladyoutlaw03 : Best of luck with your new group. One of the things about the c/p/h movement is that they´re very much about right place and right time for unit impressions. So unless you have a location where you can be Confederate Marines all or most of the time, you´re going to hear something like ¨Uh... there were no Marines present during this action so, no, your impression will not be allowed.¨

Thank you. And yep, definitely wanna avoid that. It'll mostly be a garrison/ living history impression. Fortunately there's some ample opportunities for trigger time..but they usually involve traveling.

As to the flag, I believe the answer one way or another lays within "Rebel Leathernecks" by Ralph Donnelly. It's been awhile since I've owned a copy, but it's pretty much the "bible" for anyone who wants to do a CS Marine impression in my opinion.
