Anyone know what type of sword?

BLUF: No. It is not in Peterson, or Bezdek or other of my sword references. The most visible clue is where the branches of the knuckle bow meet, and I do not see that feature in any photo of any American, Confederate or European sword. It is possible that the sword did not belong to the soldier in the photo, and may have been a photographer's prop. Try to find more details about swords made for export in Solingen, Germany. Enjoy your search for the fact, which is most of the fun of collecting.

Yeah, but what is that decoration on the knucklebow?
You see those and the decoration up near the pommel on officers swords.

It's almost certainly a Confederate Foot Officer's sword made by McElroy of Macon Ga.
The McElroy Foot Officers sword does not have the big dome pommel cap as the one in the photo posted.

McElroy, Herrington & Co produced an officer's sword that was a direct copy of the French sword right down to the little bulb on the guard. It is referenced and pictured in Confederate Edged Weapons and the Photographic Supplement of Confederate Swords by William Albaugh.

Here is a McElroy & Harrington Officer's sword. Another feature of these is that they tend not to have any wire wrap or leather on the handle. In the pic of the soldier with the sword, it also appears to me to not have wire wrap on the handle. French Model 1821's all have wire wrap.

It has wire looks like 2 strands and the McElroy & Harrington pictured does not have as large of pommel as the one pictured. Just sayin.

Here is another McElroy & Harrington sword with a different pommel cap (page 132 A Photographic Supplement of Confederate Swords, William Albaugh). Not quite as high as the one in the picture but close. Not really seeing the wire wrap in the pic above, should be more prominent along the whole handle in my opinion but easily could be wrong about it.
