CSA Memorial, Waco, Texas

When I lived in Waco, I attended Confederate Heroes Day with a friend who was a descendent of a CSA soldier. I believe they quit holding that memorial service around 1986 do to negative public pressure.

Charles Oliver walks near the confederate flag pole that was vandalized at its site along the access road on Interstate 35 in Bellmead. The site has been damaged several times over the years.

I wonder why this particular memorial continues to be vandalized. Seems like there's a marble or bronze Confederate soldier standing on practically every court house lawn in Texas. Why this one?

I was born and grew up in Waco; return several time a year to see parents. If you knew the neighborhood where the memorial is located, you would not be surprised.

Patrick, I had no idea this even existed, and I must have driven past it a hundred times over the years. Dave is correct. There's not much about Bellmead that isn't vandalized. I am shocked it is there, honestly. My husband worked at the Methodist Home Boys' Ranch not far from there, and we used to go home to Centerville through Bellmead occasionally. Not the hot spot of Waco, honestly.

Looks like the SCV or whoever owns the property could sell that parcel for a nice amount and put the monument in a bit safer place. Sad.

Okay, I think I'm catching your drift now. Too bad about the neighborhood. Yes, maybe the monument should be moved. I must say I rather like its simplicity. Nothing big and grand, but plenty of humble dignity.

It would fit nicely somewhere. Waco, unfortunately, is a city with lots of problems. It's sort of pretty on the outside with lots of unfortunate stuff underneath. I have a cousin with the Sheriff's Department, so I hear about more than I want to know.....

Dedicated in March of 2010. Its on a tiny triangular piece of private land next to the Days Inn. 4275 Interstate 35 Frontage Rd Waco, TX 76705

The Confederate flag that is displayed at the grave of Sul Ross in Oakwood Cemetery has also been vandalized multiple times.

Like I said...Waco. Interesting that in San Antonio, just east of the arena where the Spurs play (and I guess the high school basketball playoffs will be held from now on!) is a largely African-American neighborhood that surrounds the city's Cemetery #4 (I believe that's the right number). The cemetery also contains (ta-dah) the Confederate Cemetery in San Antonio. A few years ago we attended a Hood's Brigade summer muster down there and toured the cemetery. The first question everyone asked was about safety. The second question was on vandalism. The SCV guy leading the tour said to that point they had never had any damage of any kind (last time I took someone there, it still looked perfectly fine). There was definitely a battle flag flying (and they said it always is).

I think that points up the difference in the two towns, frankly.

Pictures previously posted were not those of the Confederate Memorial in Oakwood Cemetery or those of the markers located on I-35 north of town. The actual Confederate Memorial is located in the northwest corner of Oakwood and in the Confederate Section which was set aside in 1877. The actual obelisk memorial was dedicated by the UDC in 1893 and is the oldest Confederate Memorial in Texas!
