Could a dropped cannonball go through a floor?

There is a family story in my husband's family that his dad, as a young man, had a cannonball fall off a bookshelf and go through the floor of his room. Is such a thing possible? I don't know any details about the cannonball. The house was a bungalow, built in the twenties, in Michigann. I'm assuming it had pine or oak floors.

What do the experts think?
 
Well I have some solid 8, 9, 11, & a 13 inch cannonballs some solid others mortar (hollowed out). Talking 80 to possibly 100 pounds in weight. If they were up on a shelf (by the way how high up on a shelf?) and rolled off yes the damage to a floor would be scary. That's why I display them on the floor. But a 6 or 12 pounder rolling off the shelf and going through the floor I doubt it unless that was a poorly constructed floor which I would not dare walking on myself.

Of course, having one of those on a bookshelf doesn't seem like the smartest move on the Planet - apologies to @lupaglupa's in-laws. :D On the other hand, and as you point out, if it were, say, a 12 lb ball for a M1857 Napoleon, I would have moved out well before that happened. :D:D

Gravity V = 9.8 meters per second per second

If we have the weight of the cannonball & the distance it dropped the impact can be calculated.

Mr. Smart, my Watertown SD physics teacher, is looking down with wrinkled brow in wonder at me remembering these formulas.

A 12 pound (~) 6 kilo cannon ball free falling 1 meter hits at 1 meter / second = quite a smack on 1 square centimeter of flooring.

From personal experience I can attest that it hurts like #+*^! Upon impact with a toe.

I had to move my collection from a room with floor joists to a room in the basement with reinforced concrete floors due to the weight of the iron causing the floors to noticeably sag. Also, I've I had a couple bounce off my feet causing me to rethink my collecting strategy, and I went through the floors at a couple of fires in my career, but the ball going through a floor from something other than a great height with a less than substantial floor sounds like a great story but not very likely. Remember, gravity always wins.
 
Okay - let's set aside through the floor. How bad would the damage be? It must have caused some damage (not to mention a sudden awful noise). I'm thinking his hysterical mother might have speculated the possible harm if it had gone through the floor and it's been remembered that way. Supposedly she was mad enough about it that she had him sent off to military school.

Was there a rug or carpet on the floor ? On bare wood I would guess a dent , maybe some cracks. I could try it at home with one from my collection on the wood floor in the bedroom but I don't think that would go over too good.
 
How tall could a bookshelf be? Maximum I would think five feet.

Lupaglupa has put their finger squarely on the variable that can be calculated accurately. It is, literally, a high school physics class exercise to calculate the velocity & kenetic energy of a cannon ball of X weight dropped from 6' / 2 meters on down to 3' / 1 meter. What we cannot know is the nature of the flooring impacted in the example.

For what it is worth I dropped an 32 ounce framing hammer onto a 3/4" red cedar floor from about 12 feet / 4 meters.

The sound porch decking was put down in 1883. Much to my chagrin, the hammer hit a knot. The butt lapped 6" wide board broke along typical red cedar grain lines. While the hammer did not go through, the 18" long splinter did. Retrieving it was… well… a process.

I was removing a walk board scaffold, the last task from putting up a 50' X 18' tongue & groove ceiling.

Of course, the repair is right next to the front steps & annoys me every time I pass by it.

By contrast, at (+/-) 800 yards I have seen a 12 pound cannon ball grazing shot bounce off a 3/4" sheet of plywood decking used as a target. Rifle bolts smacked right through it. Variables, variables… variables.

My experience has been that if you hit a board exactly right on a knot, it will break along grain lines. Sound modern plywood flooring requires something more violent than a 12 pound weight dropped from a shelf to be penetrated.

Could this be an enhanced story that served as a reason to ship him off to military school on trumped up charges ?
