Picture reminds me of the Civil War story of desperate sergeants trying to teach farm boys and ignorant city folk to march not knowing their left foot from their right. So, exasperated sergeants would tie a whisp of hay to one foot and another of straw to the other foot.

Then they would chant the following cadence:

"Hay foot! Straw foot! Belly full of bean soup! March, old soldier, march!"
