Cotton Clad
Term used to refer to the numerous vessels protected with bales of cotton due to a lack of iron plate. Used effectively in engagements along the Mississippi and tributaries. Small arms fire would be absorbed by the thick bales, but heavier rounds tended to shred the bales which then became fire hazards.
