In order to reenact a proper Company Cook, follow this link: https://books.google.com/books?id=Q...=gbs_selected_pages&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false
To do a "mess" on campaign, basically cook with one fry pan, using foods either rationed to you or "foraged". There is a bit more, technically (so read soldiers' diaries or letters for more info), than that, but that should get you started.
Let me know how it goes!
Good Luck!

Thanks for sharing this interesting article. When I was in my younger years and in the Boy Scouts I learned to cook over an open fire using cast iron pots, big Dutch Oven pot with lid, for making biscuits or stew, also a 10 - 5/8" frying pan. I cooked for the whole troop. (20-25 scouts) My favorite meal was Breakfast: pancakes, bacon or bacon & eggs. Lunch: pot luck that included Peanut butter & Jelly sandwiches. Supper: camp fire stew. I cooked what the troop wanted. We always had plan for meals each day!

a Captain of the 1st Michigan Three Month Infantry was give money by the local citizens to buy essential items once the company arrived in Washington D.C. Soon after arriving he purchased these needed items for $4.11. a toaster, a pepperbox, a cake cutter, a nutmeg grinder, a molasses pitchers, and a tea pot.

Come on he had a saber, why would his company need a cake cutter? How is a molasses pitcher different from a regular pitcher?
