Confederates In The Attic

I originally read confederates in the attic when it came out, and on a trip to Antietam this past summer I listened to it again on the ride down. myself and my wife would like to take a trip to Richmond as a base for a gasm. I would prefer to go as hard core as Hodge did but she wont have it. any thought on best stops for a short couple day trip?

Not sure what a gasm is, but this book (great book btw) took more than a year of travel to write. If you have a couple days, I would suggest that you get a map and look and see what you can do. You practically cannot lift a rock in that part of VA without finding something ACW-related. You might want to explore Richmond.

in the book Horowitz and Hodge go on a Civil War-gasm hitting as many civil war site and monuments and battle field etc. as they could in a couple days or a week. sleeping in the car or in the woods. they would hit a couple battle fields a day make notes and look over it later. thinking of trying the same thing maybe

Welcome from Canada!I wouldn't rush around too much because there is just too much to see and take in and it can just get confusing. Just pick a couple of places and do them thoroughly. You want to keep your wife interested, not bore her to death.

don't get a lot of time off with my work so wanted to get in as much as possible and sort it out later. but we will see. not even sure when/if we are going yet. we hit Antietam this summer on the 4th and went to Gettysburg for the reenactment in the same trip first visit for me to Antietam but 4th or 5th to Gettysburg. time to hit some new sites

I hear ya about having limited time....I can sympathize......BUT, please do yourself and your investment of time, justice by not rushing through battlefields....If you rush, in the end, the most you can say is "I was there".....Point being, by taking your time, you can get the most out of the visitor center, then tour the battlefield, return to the visitor center and ask questions, spend time getting a true "feel" for the battlefield and the men who sacrificed as they fought and died.....

I've had multiple Civil War-gasms but I haven't read the book yet.

How big a part of the book is an account of their adventure?

not big. maybe a chapter. the idea was to hit as many spots as possible take pictures, notes etc and sorta dissect it all after.
sounded like fun
