I have what I believe is an authentic Confederate Stamp on an envelope which appears to have been mailed. Looks old to me.

The writing is pretty faded but clearly there, and addressed to somebody.

Here's a couple pics:

Looks like a Jefferson Davis 10 cent stamp. From what I've read these were issued in 1863..?

Anybody know much about these, or have more info ?

There were 17 different postage stamps printed by the Confederacy. 11 of them had Jefferson Davis' image on them. Postmaster Reagan wanted Davis' portrait displayed so the public would know what he looked like.Hard to tell when yours was printed but it was a later issue. The earlier ones spelled out T E N CENTS and the later ones showed 10 CENTS.

I don't expect it's worth much ($). It's certainly not in great shape. I'm more interested in it's historical value, and or connection to the war. The fact it belonged to my father gives it some sentimental value as well.
You're right, dollar wise it isnt worth much considering it's condition. But it is a piece of history plus you can't put a price on sentimental value. My eyes aren't that great anymore but it appears to have been cancelled in Virginia.Enjoy the heck out of it, you have something many other collectors don't have.

Can you take a close up of the address? I think I can make out this much of it:
Mr. Joseph N (or R) Saunders
Hant_____ (or Hard_____) / ___(?)
____sonville Co.

That's all that's visible on the image you shared. It might be Hudsonville County which is in Mississippi or Hendersonville County which is in TN or NC. If you can take a close up of the writing and maybe an oblique angle image? Maybe we can figure out who the letter was addressed to. Another clue - @Polloco said it looked to be cancelled in VA and that the ten cent stamp was for letters travelling 500 miles or more.

Looks like partial h and uds.. Miss. would tie with the 500 mile requirement for a VA cancel.

Their unclear addresses remind me of a guy I once met from West Virginia. He told me I was welcome to visit his family home anytime. When I asked him for his address, he replied that I would never be able to find it. Instead, he suggested that I go to the Post Office and ask for directions.

That's about the best I could come up with....

I know nothing about confederate stamps except for what I just read on Wikipedia:

Yours looks like the 1863-1864 "Type I".
  • Type I, initially printed by Archer & Daly, Bank Note Engravers, Richmond, Virginia, employs the same engraving as the "Frame Line" issue but without the frame lines. There were approximately 23,800,000 stamps printed from two plates, each with two panes of one hundred. The earliest recorded usage is April 21, 1863.

If you are looking for more information about Confederate stamps, I can recommend two websites and one book:
