It wouldnt drive me crazy but its in one of those close face hunter lockets with the rest of his brothers, its one of those things I bought 25 years ago. I'll try to post the pictures tomarrow. Thanks, you guys are the best!!! OK POSTED PICTURE HERE!!!!

The Custer photograph is slightly too low resolution, but a great one nonetheless, I'll search for a larger one

I believe this one is actually on the Library of Congress, do you have the name for it (Or anyone else) possibly?

no sorry, but i can keep looking and when i run across it i'll let you know ive never seen this picture before. my self and when i saw it I saved it. the civil war one i got off of 3 fold.

oh great thank you so much, I notice he has some kind of pin on his vest and he looks pretty healthy, I wonder if this was after the war picture.

I noticed the pin too, but it could be a CDV during the war, maybe a passing photographer.

No worries man. :)

Although I'm not a final authority, I could be wrong - I'm still an amateur in this field.

Greetings Custers Luck,

In the photo the oval disk can't be distinguished as the details aren't coming up.

The attire could be anywhere during or after the Civil War. After the Civil War when uniforms were turned in there was a surplus. Regular Army issued uniforms were slow to change due to the surplus.

Just my opinions,
M. E. Wolf

I'm thinking union also for the reasons that Zuza gave. Since it's in a locket I'd also imagine that it was early in or during the war as that's probably when it would have been worn.

thank you, i didnt think of that, but you got to be right on that point, some times i just stand to close to the fire.

that you M.E. Wolf I always look forward to your opinions

I say Confederate. If an officer of the Union, he is not wearing shoulder boards. The uniform darkness appears to be more grey as union blue shows up as dark black.
I don't agree with the uniform darkness, if it's after the war, orthochromatic emulsion would've lightened up a select few colors, making the Union uniform appear almost light-blue, while it's dark navy blue.

But keep in mind the details are very washed out, it's hard to make the decision between Union and Confederate.
