Confederate Kepi Color

I am trying to add color to a photo of a very young looking Confederate, but I am only now realizing that the kepi he is wearing seems a bit unusual. Besides having what looks like very small buttons, the piping on the kepi doesn't look like any kind I've ever seen for an enlisted man (although the boy might not have even be in the army). I would like to hear your thoughts on what kind of kepi this is, specifically the color.

Here's what I did with it. I was told that he was wearing a Confederate jacket, possibly Infantry, and that the hat might be Union or simply just a prop from the photographer. I doubt that this kid would be in the army, much less in any infantry capacity, so I think he's either a Drummer Boy or wearing the photographer's props.

I think you nailed it, nice work

I agree, the cap should not match the jacket; it is much better made, for one thing. In fact everything but the jacket is well-made and costly-looking. His vest, for example, is a very nice brocade (with the buttons moved over to make it fit right!). The cap seems to fit him too well to be made for a full-size man. The more I look at it the more it seems like the jacket is what is out of place. Maybe he's some kind of cadet?

Incidentally, are you the same beanbomb from the AC forum?

Yes, I am the same person from the AC forum

He is wearing a cap with "quarter trim". Quarter trim was more common on officer's caps but were not unknown for drummer boys or even some early war enlisted men.

Given my grandmother's uncle was a 12yo drummer boy in an infantry regiment who lost his left arm in battle, I'd say being a drummer boy put you in the army.
