No, he is an american because he is an american citizen.
A Contractor from India working for the US army in Iraq is not an american. He is Indian.

A slave was not a CSA citizen but property. so obviously he was not a confederate... but property.

And neither a contractor working in Iraq or a Black slave cooking for a member of the csa army is a soldier.
A slave in the CSA was confederate property, subject to the laws of the CSA thereby making him a confederate.
