I can't imagine he would wear that. Not in his personality, so to speak. Could it be Tom Custer? (I haven't read anything about his sartorial proclivities.....but maybe since his brother went in for gaudiness?)

Here's some more G.A. Custer views.

this is driving me up the wall. you know after reading up on the info you posted i would not be suprised to learn this is Lieut. Col. William N. Grier. i can't find a picture of him anywhere though. thanks for you help Nathanb1.

Hmmmmm.....this might rule him out. That guy in the pic is just too short.....

"He was described at this time as tall, slender, energetic, and dashing, with blue eyes and long golden hair and mustache."

There is a sketch that was done in 1864 when Custer was with Sheridan in which he is picking Sheridan up in a bearhug after one of the victories around the time of Cedar Creek. Sheridan was short but Custer appears to tower over him.

That photo was taken in 1864 at an encampment near Brandy Station.
So, the OB presented for the 1863 Battle of Brandy Station is irrelevant.

I think the gentleman is none other than William Averell?

you know that could be William Averell and the man standing to his right looks a little like the man standing to his right in my picture. the mystery may be solved. thanks all.

I really didn't notice that. I think you may be on to something.
btw, this picture is from 62'.

Tom Custer was a Sgt in a Michigan Regiment when the picture was taken
