IPSWICH By Gordon HarrisA Civil War heroJoseph Stockwell Manning grew up in the house at 9 High St.
At 18 Manning volunteered to fight in the Civil War and served as a private in the 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
During a battle at Fort Sanders, Tennessee on Nov. 29, 1863 his attachment was sent to dislodge retreating Confederates who had taken cover in a ditch. Gunfire separated Manning from his force and he continued forward alone and jumped into the ditch. Manning found himself next to a Confederate color-bearer and 200 of his comrades, many of whom were grievously wounded. The quick-thinking Manning demanded their immediate surrender. His ruse succeeded in confusing the rebels long enough for Union troops to arrive and take them as prisoners.
