Hello folks,
I've been reading the Atlanta Campaign ORs recently and found a "Colonel John D. Abey" listed in Volume 39 (which covers Tennessee and Kentucky during that campaign). Attached is a screenshot of his report:
I did not encounter this officer in my research of all USCT field officers (somewhere in this forum), nor in the Official Army Register Volume 8 (USCT and other troops). Additionally, Search for Soldiers turns up no John D. Abey, and the closest match is a Corporal John Abey of the 67th PAVI.
In desperation, I Googled him, and the following was my result:
Kind of disappointing. Checking back with the OR, I found that Abey did not appear in any correspondence or even any other volume in any of the four series of the Official Records. Could anybody help me figure this out? For him to have the rank of Colonel and yet have no mention anywhere other than the OR is most interesting.
