Howard University in Washington, D.C. is named after Union General Oliver O. Howard. He was a founder of the university and Commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau. What other colleges/universities are named after Civil War veterans?

Well, I went to Sam Houston State U., named after the hero of the Texas Revolution... who had to resign as governor because he couldn't bear to see Texas secede. Does that count? He was a general... just in the wrong war.

Now, if we were talking counties...

I should have put down Sam Houston, but you had mentioned him. I put in Davidson, because so few Generals are listed. Ike has a college named for him, so does Pierce. Wasn't Pierce a Mexican War general?

How about:
  1. Fisk University (Clayton B. Fisk)
  2. Gordon College (John B. Gordon)
  3. McNeese State University (John McNeese)

you bring up a very serious question I have often wondered why we allow colleges to be named after Confederate generals and politicians. No other country in the world would do such a thing I believe it is respects the man who fought and died for the union.
