Incredible Site - loads of info, diaries etc. - Enjoy:

http://www.soldierstudies.org/

Site Info:

This site is dedicated to the preservation of American Civil War information, particularly the correspondences, diaries and letters of soldiers who served in the field and elsewhere. We hope that by providing a comprehensive and searchable archive of this information a more complete picture of one of the bloodiest chapters in American history can be better understood by researchers, archivists, historians and students alike.

Unlike other Civil War databases, SoldierStudies will remain free and open to the public. But it depends on your cooperation. If you have letter or diary transcripts or scans please consider uploading them. It's a very simple process and you can take pride in knowing you are helping to preserve history for posterity. We do not exploit or profit from this information. The developers of this site are Civil War enthusiasts with altruistic intentions.

If you are interested in searching through our archives, you may do so without registering. If you are interested in contributing a correspondence (letter or diary) and/or soldier information, you may register as a Contributor.

If you have letters or diaries that are not transcribed, you can photocopy them and mail to us (copies will not be returned). Use the Contact form to request help or assistance.

Thanks, Dan - that's the minefield on the internet - I try, in my posts, to acknowledge who wrote the article etc. but always wonder if it'll kick back as copyright problem.

Reading the letters what impresses me most is that they seem almost like our contemporaries. People really haven't changed all that much.

One difference though is their penmanship is so much better than ours.

I've alawys been in awe of their penmanship back then, even folks that couldn't spell that well wrote well. I imagine the schooling they did receive emphasized good penmanship over spelling

I have over 130 documents of all types and can't remember where they all come from. Do historical societies, or can they, copyright these things? I just now they are worth sharing. About 100 of them come from the Chemung County (NY) Historical Society, not exactly an academic hot bed. Others from NY State library.

Not an academic hotbed  - but that's how they found Bachelder's papaers on Gettysburg - at the New Hampshire Historical Society - and Gettysburg has never been the same since - almost any book lists them as a primary source. You'd almost have to be a lawyer to figure out the legal implications concerning "old" material.
