Civil War Memorial, Hackettstown, NJ

Went hiking up to Jenny Jump State Park today and made it a point to stop by the Civil War Memorial in Hackettstown, NJ today.

Here is "Billy Yank"

What stands there is actually a recreation. The original was torn down to make way for Route 46. The statue sold for scrap! This is quite literally one of the newer Civil War memorials out there. Its been there since 2001. The JW Fiske marking led me to believe that perhaps they had salvaged the original statue, but the historical society confirms that marking was put on the replica itself.

Apparently it cost 30,000 pennies in 1896.

Shame they took down the original of course.

Jenny Jump deserves a minor note as well:

parts of NJ are lovely! I grew up just across the river from Belvidere, got married in Belvidere. lived in Budd Lake for a while, Hackettstown was part of my old stomping grounds. North NJ, ehhh, not so much likey! lol

My former employer is in Piscataway, NJ. I used to drive through the Delaware Water Gap (right on th PA/NJ border) every trip east. It is beautiful country.

Great monument...although a remake. DownJersey farm country in the southern counties, the marshes, beaches and water gap are beautiful.

I'll have to take y'all's word for it. I spent 10 VERY long weeks at beautiful Fort Dix, I didn't see a Garden the whole time I was there. From the photos I wish I could have gotten out and seen the real NJ.

Kudos to whoever was responsible for recreating and displaying a Civil War monument in these times!
