Recreated Civil war era bbq sauce


I cooked this tonight with chicken. BBQ sauce now v war time is quite different. I love the tang of a nice vinegar sauce
The recipe seems like more of a Baste than a sauce. Is it supposed to be "runny" (like water) as opposed to "saucy" (thick and slow to pour)? I'd like to make some, but I want to do it right.
