Charles Verse

[54th Virginia Reb]

Hello, is anybody on this site able to find the court martial record for Charles Verse, 4th Wisconsin Calvary, Co. H, in 1864 in Baton Rouge? Any details as to why he was court martialed would be appreciated.

I'm seeing most records as Verce, not Verse. That's the spelling he got his pension under.

Court martial trials are dodgey. I've found some online by Googling the name and, then, going under "Books". However, there were some that I just couldn't find at all. There is a pretty good description at https://blogs.loc.gov/law/2012/11/civil-war-military-trials/ There are some links at the bottom; these go into the catalogue which is (I believe) the only way to search the LOC files off-site.

I have in the past found information in newspapers but when I looked for Charles, using both spellings, I did not find anything.

Charles enlisted in the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1861 which later became the 4th Cavalry, any help with records will be appreciated.

The case number is LL-1. For details of the case, you'd need to pull the case file from NARA in D.C.
