Does anyone know of a history for this unit? All I've found was a roster, which was helpful; but the unit was disbanded and some (all?) were added to Purcell's Artillery. So maybe I need both to find out if an ancestor transferred or was mustered out in `62 (I believe that is the year). Fold3 and the Soldier and Sailor System were between vague and useless.

I appreciate it, thank you. I may have found something in the Virginia Regimental Series collection, mixed with some other units; but I don't know yet if the book is still available. I doubt that they are available online.

These two volumes in the Virginia Regimental Series might be helpful to you.

Lowry's, Bryan's, and Chapmans's Batteries, of Virginia Artillery
by J. L. Scott

The Danville, Eightstar New Market and Dixie Artillery
by Robery H. Moore,II

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but when a unit was disbanded did it imply that the members just went their own way? Free to join other units if desired?

Hi, I'm putting a Wikipedia article together on Chapman's Battery, though I don't have the Howard book. In Sifakis' book on Virginia regiments he lists them as "Virginia Monroe 'Dixie' Artillery", it's a bit confusing. I will post a link to the Wikipedia page one I have it up.

You didn't say but I assume they are a Virginia unit?

Yes, sorry. I believe that some references list the unit as Dixie Light Artillery, others as W.H. Chapman's Dixie Artillery (Light). The unit was formed in VA. in 1861, disbanded in 1862. I have a Unit roster and a small amount of additional information; My biggest question is what does disbanded mean? See Ya' later boys, I'm goin' home?
