We all heard of Chaplain William Corby of the Irish Brigade. There's a statute of him at Gettysburg. Anyway, I came across a second hand book, Look Out Below! by Chaplain Francis Sampson. Maj. Gen. Chaplain Sampson joined the 501 Parachute Regiment, 101 Airborne and accompanied his congregation in their jump into Normandy, Holland (Market Garden), Bastonge (where he was captured). He served again in Korea and in Vietnam. What's this got to do with Chaplain Corby? Well, Chaplain Sampson was the first recipient of the Corby Award, presented to him by Notre Dame College.

If I recall correctly, there is an identical statue of the Gettysburg statue on campus at Notre Dame, where it is referred to by football fans as the "fair catch" statue because of the upraised hand (in benediction).
