Chamberlains at Gettysburg

In 1909, four years after the death of his beloved wife, Fanny, General Chamberlain brought his family to Gettysburg for what would be his last visit before passing in 1914. The family was photographed posing together below Table Rock in Devil's Den. The General is seen sitting casually on a rock with his son next to him. On the left are his in laws with his granddaughters to the rear. Standing just to Chamberlain's right is the family matriarch since Fanny's death, his daughter, Grace. It is no coincidence that she is striking the same pose as her mother when photographed 50 years before. See photo below. The "X" on my matching modern photo indicates where the General was sitting.

Good catch regarding the identical poses. Since daily photos have become a viral activity, all of the symbolic formalities have been drained from them.
