MIDDLETOWN — About 45 undeveloped acres stretching south from where Frederick County meets Warren County near Interstate 81 are set to be added to a regional group's collection of preserved Civil War battlefield land. Funk reached out to the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation (SVBF), a New Market-based nonprofit which manages more than 1,000 acres of preserved Civil War grounds throughout the region, hoping that officials with the organization might be open to striking a deal. Plans for the 45 acres haven't been determined, but the eventual goal is to incorporate them into the more than 2,000 nearby acres which have been preserved by SVBF and local partner organizations, in order to open it to the public for educational and recreational purposes. Wednesday's announcement follows an event on Monday in Middletown acknowledging an agreement between the town and SVBF to create a park on 23.5 acres of town-owned land, with trails, signage and other improvements funded by the foundation. Another announcement is set for 11 a.m. Friday regarding the preservation of 74 acres at the historic Hite Farm at Cedar Creek at 1352 Bowman Mill Road. State officials will be present to announce the recipients of up to $5.25 million in grants from the 2024 Virginia Battlefield Preservation Fund.

Middletown Secures Key Civil War Battlefield Parcel on Main Street
July 15, 2025

The Town of Middletown has added another piece of history to its growing list of preserved green spaces with the recent purchase of a battlefield parcel at 7881 Main Street, right along historic U.S. Route 11. This land witnessed intense fighting during the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864, one of the most important battles of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley. Town leaders say the purchase not only protects historic ground, but also prevents unwanted development that could add traffic, strain local utilities, or increase school enrollment in already crowded areas. The new purchase brings the total land preserved within Middletown's town limits to nearly 40 acres, including the well-loved Town Park, Veterans Memorial, and the recently acquired Bernstein parcel.

Preservation Deal Helps Middletown Save Battlefield and Rebuild Historic Train Station
October 15, 2025
Mike McCool

A historic Civil War battlefield and a beloved train station are getting new life thanks to a $75,000 preservation easement between the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and the Town of Middletown. The agreement permanently protects 23 acres of land at Cedar Creek Battlefield, one of the most important Civil War sites in the Shenandoah Valley. The parcel sits near the center of town, close to the historic Wayside Inn, and includes 20 acres purchased by the town and 3 acres donated by a local developer. In return for granting a conservation easement on the land, Middletown received $75,000 from the Battlefields Foundation. That money is being used to help fund the rebuilding of the town's historic B&O Train Station, which will soon become home to the Winchester & Middletown Model Railroad Association.
