Cedar Creek First Call

Hey y'all,

Yes it is true that a lot of big re-enactments have been happening. I can vividly remember the 150s - First Manassas/Bull Run; New Market; Gettysburg; Cedar Creek that we participated in.

The next big one is Cedar Creek at the end of October and I have self redacted the trouble of a few years ago. Onward … This is what we used to call a First Call and I am sure the old timers and perhaps the newbies know the wisdom of having a heads up before taking the field.

I plan to attend as a walk on in all my duds on that Saturday and have a good persual around and decide if I want or can in some way get my gumption up for three max return.
Still like to walk on the LOUD side. It's what I know….

My personal goal is to make it to the Yankee camp and pass the suttlers without buying another pair of britches! \o/

It is a beautiful setting and the weather is usually idle. Can be a tad bit windy there before Halloween. I have a closeness with the field that I cannot describe.

If only I didn't need to work for a living! My unit is going to Chickmauga and to Camp Wildcat. I would like to go, but I don't fancy driving that far after work. I just don't have that many personal days.
Yea ma'am when we were active (2011-14) I was working in my second career down here in Spotsy. I remember the Friday after work drive to the battle and the return on Sunday for the return to the salt mine on Monday.

2nd retirement is sweeter and now lots of time. Probably, the Virginias, Maryland, Pennsylvania and the Carolinas for my range. Dunno? I think there is a lot in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Six events a year plus our old campground (homecoming) event was average for our time.

So, if I do make the plunge it would be artillery for if we are honest old dogs can learn new tricks - it would be the limping about afterwards. And as a certified old artillery goat that would be something I avoided except at Bull Run 150 … where the trees and bushes were sweating.

I'll be at the Cedar Creek reenactment both Saturday and Sunday. I'm not sure yet if I bring my camp dress or come as a normal spectator. Would be lovely to meet other CWT folks.
I hope to attend on Saturday and concrete tent it in Front Royal and get there early. Full duds and black hat, red cord and raccoon ***** bone in front with used primers attached. Not my original hat but a good reserve. Red shirt, my original patched up britches, of course my faithful shoes and artillery jacket. I found my canvas stool in the shed.

I hope be there as a spectator.

Sometimes I wear a slouch hat to honor my great, great grandfather and his brother who were there in the 7th VA Cavalry and sometimes I wear an 87th PA Kepi to honor my great grandfather who was there with them in the 6th Corps.

I also hope to be at the Muster in Winchester the week before. Maybe I will talk some other folks into coming!

I will be looking for everyone! @OldTimerCannoneer69 you sound quite distinctive, so I may be able to find you! @captaindrew, If you let me know what unit you are in I should be able to find you at least. That would be great! I love walking the camps and talking to folks. And I would certainly like to meet our members! @luinrina maybe we will run into each other somehow. Closer to the event I can post a better description of what I will be wearing...

I have been going as a spectator since 1993. The 150th in 2014 was very powerful and moving to me since I have ancestors that fought one another there. On Sunday the 19th I drove around the battlefield and stood where they were 150 years prior, to the Day, hour, and to the minute in one case!

I'll be on the lookout for you, sir!

Happy to hear you're coming back over. I'll be there, hope to catch up with you.
Looking forward to seeing you again, Drew! Will Gary and Skyelur be with you?

I'll be at the muster, so if you make that, we should already meet then. Looking forward to meeting you, sir!

No Gary and Skyelur, I haven't heard from either of them in a while. Gary joined the real army about a year ago. I heard from him when he graduated basic training but nothing since.

I'll be with the 12th Georgia Co F. 6th Battalion ANV. We're usually within the first few streets closest to the road in the CS camp. If you find some shelter halves and just blankets on the ground in the middle of A Frame City that's most likely us.

I should be able to find you; although I am sure you are out and about quite a bit, drilling etc. throughout the day. But we will connect.

I think it is awesome that the unit you reenact was actually at the battle! As a matter of fact the 12th Georgia fought against my great grandfather at the battle - or, at least, very close to him. He was in the 87th PA, Emerson's 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 6th Corps up on Red Hill behind Belle Grove which is where Evan's Brigade helped break the Union line. It is also interesting because I believe the 12th Georgia was at Battalion strength at Cedar Creek and so was the 87th PA.

Regardless, it would be fun to meet!

I am bracing myself to look at my old canvas tent again. I recall discovering her in the shed in a state in spring and drying her out and attacking it with bleach. My son in law stuffed it back into its box and I did double tarp it and I still have to find the poles and stakes.

Shelter half's sound like the way to go for single guy accommodations or under the tarp with a blanket. Although I would use the blanket to hide the sleeping bag and air mattress. It can get chilly at night at Cedar Creek.

Yaas the 150s were awesome and I can replay each one in my mind. Cedar Creek and Gettysburg were on our list for each of the three years we re-enacted. The heavenly benediction on that last day at Gettysburg (150) when the sky opened and it poured on us driving the gun back to the camp. We passed an English CSA infantry gentleman who was sloughing it though the mud and he grunted as we slid past. "Bloody English like weather ". Although I recall this storm to be quite violent and loud.

For Cedar Creek - besides some food and jawing in the CSA camp -my goal is to actually make it to the USA camp. Would y'all suggest I bring my Union artillery coat so I would not be seen as a spy? I can just tuck my Reb one under my arm. It is a bit tight and restricts my movement a bit but I can still get the top button in.

I would like to met up with as many of y'all as possible. Would be interested in units that can galvanize for artillery. Mid Atlantic/NC and almost heaven also.

Just an overnight for me as my GSD will be almost a year old and a daddy's girl.

We're there every year, it certainly is a special place for us. The 12th spent the majority of the war in the Valley. One of these days I'd like to take some time and retrace some of their steps other than Cedar Creek.

Was the 1st brigade from Sussex county?
The first brigade was organized from many counties throughout the state including Sussex county. It was an infantry brigade which included the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 15th, 23rd, and the 40th New Jersey infantry regiments. Not all of these units served at the same time in the brigade, but they did serve their entire service in the organization
